My Interview with Safety Detectives: Talking Ethical UX Design and the Future of User Experience
I’m excited to share that I was recently featured in an interview with Safety Detectives, where I had the opportunity to discuss some of the most pressing topics in the UX design world. The conversation touched on everything from the ethical responsibilities we hold as designers to the evolving role that AI plays in the user experience landscape.
One of the main topics we explored was the concept of dark patterns—those sneaky design tricks some companies use to manipulate user behavior. It’s something I’m personally passionate about avoiding, and I believe there’s a better way to design interfaces that build trust rather than exploit users. The interview gave me a chance to share my thoughts on how UX professionals can design with integrity, prioritizing users’ needs while still meeting business goals.
With the rise of AI, we’re seeing a rapid transformation in how user experiences are crafted. From automating user research to creating personalized interactions at scale, AI is making its mark. But, like all technologies, it comes with challenges. In the interview, I discussed the importance of balancing AI’s efficiency with the human touch that makes for truly engaging and empathetic design.
For those who don’t know, I’ve spent the past 23 years working in UX, having collaborated with some incredible brands and companies along the way. While I now run my own UX agency, Create Ape, my freelance work has always allowed me to stay connected to the broader design community, which is why I was so excited to contribute to the conversation with Safety Detectives.
It’s always a great opportunity to reflect on where the industry is heading and how we can all improve the experiences we create for users in an ethical and innovative way.
